So many times, people tell me that what they want most is inner peace. Ask any Miss America contestant what she wants to see and the stock answer is often “world peace.” Yet, there is no magic. To have peace, we must sow peace. It is a straightforward equation. Two times four is never five. It is always four. The same with peace. You must have it to sow it.
A driver cuts you off and merrily goes to the exit he seemed to have forgotten existed until one second before it appeared. You, shocked and dazed, are quick to respond with words your mother told you not to say. That driver got where he was going and is happily on his or her way. You, on the other hand, are fuming, sputtering and furious. Who’s suffering? Only you, yet you are doing it to yourself. Hardly a recipe for peace!
Next time this happens, try taking a deep breath and being thankful for your safety. Forget the other person except to wish them well. Focus on allowing this event to be an exercise in peace for you. All the cursing, yelling and energy you expend in describing his parentage only serves to take you off your center. Chose differently. Peace is, in fact, up to you.
Sow Peace today.
