When Miss America hopefuls enthusiastically endorse the idea of world peace, everyone applauds. We know it is an ideal worth working towards. The problem, as I see it, is that it seems so remote, so distant from ourselves, that we tend to leave it at the idea stage. In fact, we may even be thinking and hoping that “they” will take care of it. “They” are people remote from us, in some political landscape that we could not possibly influence or reach.

I see it differently. If I’m still yelling at the driver in front of me, world peace is a ways off. There is no escaping that reality. It is not “they” that bring it about. It is me and you sowing peace in our minds, our hearts and our relationships that lead to the possibility of world peace. There is no “they” we can count on. Do you believe that?

It’s so comforting to think that someone else will take care of world peace. Somehow, it’s out of our hands. Not so! It is in every interaction within ourselves and within our relationships that leads to the world peace we can experience. Can you imagine what would happen if every person committed to taking care of peace within their own world? We would live in a collaborative, communicative world.
